The damage of the cars looks great and you can see what needs to be fixed. I hadn’t noticed this because I have not had to check the damage to a vehicle in a racing game for quite a while.Ī 'anytime' repair system means that detached car parts come flying back from wherever they were lost in the level as the car reassembles and heavy damage and dents get buffed out. The only time I needed guidance was when Neil remarked that I had a flat tire that needed fixing mid race. The controls of the game are easily recognisable for most gamers, with the left trigger used for a brake and reverse and right trigger used for acceleration. There are six people from the original game involved in Max Damage and the game really does feel like a resurrection rather than an emulation of the franchise. It was originally meant to be a rebuild of the original title, but ambition got the better of the team and they expanded it even further including making their own engine. The game has been in development for over four years. Neil confirmed to me that many of the development team are car fanatics, by creating their own engine they have been able to replicate the experience of driving in Banger Races and the kinetic energy of hitting other vehicles. ![]() I expected the driving style to be more arcadish like a Twisted Metal or Mario Kart - but the physics engine is closer to a Forza or Gran Turismo in controlling the car. I played the first campaign map, based on a map from the first game that has been re-imagined and improved to a glorious 3D environment. The game will feature a 16 Chapter, 63 event single player campaign game. Max Damage has been in development until the team were confident that they could achieve their goal of making the best Carmageddon ever on Console. The series has clearly been misunderstood as it really is a satire of B-Movie racing films. Neil spoke to me of how the game replicates the British influence of Monty Python and slapstick humour. This has allowed the comedic influence to come through. The content of Carmageddon Max Damage is mild compared to how games have progressed in a dark tone with the likes of Grand Theft Auto, Manhunt and The Punisher. “We never deliberately courted controversy and we made it clear that it is cartoon violence. After 10 months of appeal, the BBFC certified the original version. They changed the game to contain zombies with green blood or robots with black oil instead of people. They refused to certify the game unless all blood and gore was removed. ![]() The game reminded me of playing it on my friends PC in 1997, which seemed to be get more attention for the reaction it got from the BBFC rather than its fun gameplay. As opposed to being a shameless attempt to emulate a Carmageddon game, or attempt to paste the brand on to a different style of racing genre, this is a Carmageddon title for the current generation. ![]()
